Reception theory

1) What is the preferred reading of a media text?
The meaning the producers intend to communicate. This builds on the idea that producers can position the audience in a certain way and influence their reading so they accept the intended message by using recognised codes and conventions (such as stereotypes).

2) What is the oppositional reading of a media text?
The oppositional reading goes against the meaning the producers are trying to create. The audience reject the intended message and construct an opposite reading instead. This can be due to their own social, political or moral beliefs and values.

Re-watch the trailer for the film Harry Brown:

3) How does the Harry Brown trailer position the audience to respond to the teenage characters in the film?
it connotes that the teenagers are savage and vicious because of the amount of violence and there is.

4) Why might young people reject this reading and construct an oppositional reading of the trailer?
Because most people are not like that they are mostly nice and caring and don't go hanging out in gangs.

Look at this McDonald's advert:

5) Write a 150+ word analysis of the McDonald's advert using preferred, negotiated and oppositional readings.

What the producers intend to communicate to the audience is that the Big Mac from McDonald's is like really juicy and mouth watering because of their poster they are showing of there burger. Also what it is trying to connote to the audience is that the burger is really nice and that you should try it out because of the text underneath the burger which says "It's as good as it is big."

On the other hand, even though the Big Mac may look delicious it is also very unhealthy to eat because it could effect your body posture (could make you get fatter) also it could make you get obesity if you have it over and over again.Furthermore, the burger may look good but the amount of oil in it and fattiness in it could also really make you not do any exercise and make you get out of breath really quickly.

In conclusion, i think that maybe people eat the burger is because of the way it looks on the poster Also the reason why people would not want to try this new burger is because they could be on a diet to lose weight and could be like persuaded by the poster to try it.
