Magazines: Introduction to Representation
Look at the magazine cover for Closer that we studied last week:
Answer the following questions on your blog:
1) Write a definition of representation in media studies. Clue: The answer is in the notes above!
Representation connotes the way the media portrays the world.
2) Now look at the cover of Closer magazine above. List all different types of people and groups represented on the front cover. E.g. women, celebrities, race/ethnicity etc.
That it shows celebrities and that it shows famous people having babies and that people losing weight also it shows people revealing secrets.
3) What does the representation of women on this front cover suggest female audiences are mainly interested in?
It connotes that women's are interested in babies and that they want to stay slim and fit because of the amount of weight that women lost.
4) Are there any stereotypes you can identify? E.g. women and motherhood; celebrities etc.
That if an ordinary women was going to have a baby she would look inside through this magazine because it shows celebrities having babies and that she could pick up some advice from it.
5) Is there anything on the cover that subverts typical stereotypes in the media?
That it shows famous people doing normal things. For example, having a baby.

6) What is the preferred reading of this magazine cover - what do the producers want audiences to think when they see it?
They want people to think that celebrities do normal things and that it connotes that they are like human like us doing normal things like an average human would do.

They could be offended because its mainly about women's and there are hardly any men on the cover which could connote to them being sexist.
8) What are the social and cultural contexts to this magazine cover? What effect might this magazine have on readers or society?
That it could help them be happy when they have a baby for the women's who are nervous for the baby to come out and that if a women is not sure of having a baby they can see it and make them feel better because of the positive comments that experienced women's are making. For example, "I've struggled- but I never thought i'd be this happy."
