How are narrative used to communicate meaning in the extract [8 marks]
Propp's character theory states that heroes/villains/princess/helper. Evidence from the clip to help support my answer is Ram, when he comes and be the hero when the villain (who is Corakinus) starts to take his heart back from April which lead's to her being the princess because Ram has to save her from killing her own dad.
The effect it has on the audience could be that when you can clearly tell that Corakinus is the villain because he is all in black with smoke and fire coming from him.
Todorov's Theory of Equilibrium states that when everything is normal until an distraction happens and messes the normal which makes a new normal. Evidence from the clip, is when it's just April and Mum a home until the dad comes in and then Corakinus starts to take control of herself and goes to kill Corakinus. The effect it has on the audience, is that when April goes into the portal to fight Corakinus which is unconventional because girls are meant to be scared but April - who is not - goes to fight him head on with Ram following behind.

Class was specifically targeted at a young adult audience.
How successful is the extract in targeting this particular audience group? [12 marks]
Young people will enjoy this clip because they can relate to this (personal identity) and relate to the coming of age narrative.
Young female teenagers would be inspired by this because April is shown as a strong female teenager who is standing above her dad holding sword in her hands. This effect's the audience because young female teenagers are meant to be weak and powerless so when they see April all strong and powerful they can look up to her as a role-model. This is also very subversive because April is a geek but who is physically powerful.
Young people or teenagers enjoy Science Fiction because it provides them with Diversion or escapism from their lives. It is interesting because it is about new innovations and futuristic weapons or aliens from another planet.
Young people or teenagers would like to enjoy watching Science Fiction because of the costumes. The costumes are dark which connotes that they are evil and that the juxtaposition in April's world which is all light but in Corakinus world it is all dark which makes it more evil. The prop's make it more scientific because of when April summon's the sword's from her hands because of Corakinus trying to take control of his heart.
