Summer Project: coursework planning

1) Research: Music videos

Watch the following music videos and analyse an aspect of media language for each one:

Music video 1: Marshmello x YUNGBLUD x blackbear - Tongue Tied

How is narrative used in this music video to engage the audience?

The narrative for this music video is that a bunch of civilised people become freedom fighters to try to retaliate against the authorities because of them arresting everyone they see and there leader (YUNGBLUD). This engages the audience because it can help persuade normal people to try to make a change for the better for the world by doing protests against the bad decisions that Parliament makes sometimes.

Music video 2: Years & Years - I Wish I Knew

How is camerawork and mise-en-scene used in this video? Use CLAMPS to remember the different aspects of mise-en-scene.

For CLAMPS for this music video is that for Costumes is the whole band dress in normal people's clothes to connote that they are trying to be like normal everyday people. For Lighting, the music video is very bright because of light coming in through the window to connote that it's a warm and friendly song. For Actors, in the music video the band members while playing there music equipment's they try to move around with there legs and arms to connote that they are trying to get into the beat and rhythm of the song. For Makeup, in the music video there ain't really any just for the main band leaders hair style because of it all being messy and gruffy to connote that he doesn't really care how he looks. For Props, in the music video there are a lot of banter decorations and a lot of light to connote that it's a fun happy song that will get you moving. Lastly, for Settings, the music video looks like as if a party is going to begin because of there being banter decorations and a disco ball.

Music video 3: Foals - Hummer

How is editing used in this music video to engage the audience?

Editing for this music video is used to engage the audience is by how it matches the beat because of the band members in the music video moving around and then the music playing at the same to match them and there beat to connote to the audience that anybody can dance to this song in any way they like so long as it matches the beat or rhythm of it.

Music video 4: Your choice

Select a music video of your choice and analyse an element of it e.g. narrative, camerawork, editing, visual effects etc.

Oasis- Stand By Me.

Narrative- A person on a motor bike who crashes into a store while 2 twins who where having a argument until one of the twins get hit by the bike which leads to the person on the bike crashing into the store and then people start to loot out of it while the twin who didn't get hit by the bike calls the hospital and rushes off following the people that take her other twin into ICU crying. The whole point of the story is that no one knows what might happen too the people we care about the most so don't fight with them.

Camerawork- Shows mainly of the twins, the band Oasis, the guy on the bike, and normal people running and ducking out the way of the bike coming towards them and trying to save other civilians from the bike as well so that they don't get hurt by the bike.

Editing- Matches to the same time whenever one of the band members played the guitar showing scenes of the 2 twins fighting from different camera angles and then of the bike crashing into one of the twins and then of the person on the bike crashing into the store.

Visual effects- When the person on the bike crashed into the store falling off his bike and crashing into the store's window head first right after he hit one of the twins arguing and then the effects of blood coming down the twins body.

2) Music video planning

Plan out the basic details for your music video. What song do you plan to use? Will your video be performance or narrative based (or both)? Complete the following on your blog:

Artist and song you have chosen: Oasis- Stand By Me

Plan for music video (narrative/performance etc.): 2 best friends who are always there looking out for each other having each others backs until they get into a argument and later on get into a fight leaving one of them severely injured.

Actors/performers you plan to use:  My friends (3 of them) and then of only 2 of us being best friends while the other records. We would then act at some place where my friend helps me out and then me doing the same for him some where else. Later, me and my friend have a heated argument and then one of us two being on the floor all bruised up and bloody as the aftermath of the fight presumably dying.

Locations: Classroom, Gym (not too sure on that yet), alleyway, some bits of my home.

Costume/make-up/props required: School/gym clothes, fake blood, fake bruises, fake ripped up clothing, paper, gym equipment, knife (maybe).

3) Statement of Intent

On the same Summer Project blog post, write the rough first draft of your 300-word Statement of Intent for the two-minute music video you plan to create. The final draft of this document will be submitted to the exam board alongside your music video production and is worth 10 marks of the overall 60 marks available.

Guidance and minimum requirements can be found in the AQA brief from their NEA Student Booklet.

We also strongly recommend you look at our Statement of Intent suggested content document too.
